Education / Professional Services
Formal education is the principal means of developing human capital and building capacity. It produces
the labour force needed for the work place and for the socioeconomic development of any
nation. It is the main means of producing professionals in the
different fields of human endeavour. Your level of education and the
certificate you obtained determines what sort of labour you are (whether skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled labour), hence your placement in an employment and the type of remuneration you get. Workers are paid according to the
level of training obtained. Apparently, their level of training determines the value they can deliver. Hence those with higher certificate earn higher
income while those with lower qualification earn lower. To enhance your
chance of getting a job with a better remuneration, it is imperative that you strive and
qualify as a professional in at least one area of human endeavour, as it
is practically impossible today for one to get a job without requisite
qualification for it. Also today, it is unlawful for you to practice in
any profession without the requisite qualification. You would be
prosecuted for quackery if you are caught doing that. Formal education remains
the best means of developing human capital and getting good job
opportunities as it empowers people to add greater value to themselves
and to the society. However, it is best to back it up with a vocational
skill in order not to stay idle while looking for a job after schooling.
You must learn a skill while you are still in school, probably during
holidays.Vocational skills can be acquired through formal or informal settings Though vocational skills should be used to complement education,
but they are by no means substitutes to formal education. While vocational
skill can bring you additional income and satisfy your curiosity and passion in a particular endeavour, education develop your intellect,
enhances your cognitive ability, helps you to reason logically and
increase your capacity to handle complex matters. The skills acquired at the higher education level helps you to deliver greater value. Above all, it is the only means of obtaining a professional qualification that you need to take up a professional job in the work place. Professional qualification is obtained after many years of advanced or post secondary school education, with stringent requirement for entry (like passing a national or external examination), while vocational skill takes a few weeks to a few years to obtain, often with no stringent requirement for entry.
